The number of animals abused each year is disgusting. Sadly, while writing up articles I often come across videos of abused and mistreated animals. Most of the time, the animals are being rescued and cared for. Yet each time I watch a video I find myself asking “why”?
How can people treat animals so poorly? Animals are often treated as property, but they are living creatures that deserve respect. Those individuals who fail to treat their animals decently are criminal in my opinion.
At best, they are guilty of negligence. At worse, they are violent and depraved. Fortunately, many jurisdictions are cracking down on people who abuse animals.
Animal abuse registries are now being created by local and state governments. Good! If you abuse an animal, you deserve to be on this list.
New York City now has an animal abuse registry. So too does the state of Tennessee. Further, every state in the United States can now level felony-level charges against people who abuse animals. In practice, however, most animal abusers are charged with misdemeanors.
The FBI has also added animal cruelty to its list of Class A felonies. So remember, if you abuse your pet, you might end up behind bars and on a list.
I don’t want anyone to go to jail, but if you abuse an animal and get locked up, you’re getting your just desserts.
