The story of a pit bull in a California shelter with a high kill rate will melt your heart. And don’t worry, while this story is emotionally devastating, it does have a happy ending.
No trigger warning necessary.
Employees at Carson Shelter went out of their way to help Blue after they noticed his particularly sad expression and his frequent, heartbreaking cries. They also noticed “tears” in his eyes and tried to cheer him up with treats to no avail.
Obviously, there could be another explanation for the tears but they certainly didn’t hurt his chances of getting adopted after Carson Shelter workers uploaded a video of Blue (full name: Blue King) on Facebook.
While many people claim that animals such as dogs and elephants cry, experts claim there’s little proof to back up whether or not the tears coordinate with emotions or health issues such as allergies.
Regardless, Blue spent many nights at the shelter looking exceedingly “sad and depressed” according to onlookers.
IF Blue was crying tears of sadness, it would be because his so-called family tragically surrendered him after they moved to a home that didn’t allow pets (or maybe just pets his size or breed). His REAL family (and hopefully his forever home), Jennifer McKay, came to visit him shortly after the video was uploaded.
“He wouldn’t even acknowledge me at all,” McKay said in an interview with The Dodo. “All the other dogs were making eye contact and wagging their tails, but he wouldn’t stand up, wouldn’t come see me.”
“You could tell that every time someone walked by, it was like he was looking for [his family]” she added. “Like he knew he had been left there.”
McKay decided to adopt Blue in spite of him ignoring her during their meet-and-greet.
After she took him home he became “a new dog.” A dog who loves typical awesome dog things like belly rubs and cuddling as well as one not-so-typical thing.
“He’s obsessed with looking at himself in the mirror,” McKay said.
MOST animals are thought to not be able to recognize their own reflections but Blue isn’t most animals. Perhaps he cries real emotional tears AND knows how handsome he is. Stranger things have happened.
